By UK Storms

Storm Éowyn is currently impacting the UK, bringing severe weather conditions that are causing significant travel disruptions nationwide. The Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning in effect until 9 pm on Sunday, December 22, covering Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and most of England. Gusts are expected to reach 50 to 60 mph widely, with the potential for 70 mph in exposed coastal and hilly areas, particularly in the north and west.

In Slough, the current weather is cloudy with a temperature of 42°F (5°C). The forecast for today indicates very windy conditions with sunny intervals and a shower or two, with a high of 43°F (6°C) and a low of 37°F (3°C).

Travel services are experiencing notable disruptions:

• Air Travel: Heathrow Airport has canceled approximately 100 flights today due to strong winds and airspace restrictions. Jet2 has issued a travel warning, advising passengers of potential delays and offering options to change flights without fees. Ryanair has also alerted travelers to possible disruptions and recommends checking their app for the latest updates.

• Rail Services: National Rail has warned of potential disruptions across Scotland, Wales, and England. ScotRail has implemented speed restrictions, leading to possible cancellations or delays of up to 30 minutes. Great Western Railway is operating a road replacement service between Exeter Central and Okehampton/Barnstaple until around 6 pm. Northern is facing higher-than-normal cancellation rates due to staff shortages.

• Ferry Services: Several ferry operators, including NorthLink and CalMac in Scotland, have canceled services. Routes between the UK and Ireland are also disrupted, exacerbated by the temporary closure of the port at Holyhead.

Given the current conditions, it’s advisable to check with your travel provider before setting out and to exercise caution, especially in areas prone to flooding or power outages. Stay updated with the latest weather advisories and plan your travel accordingly.
