The Met Office named Storm Austen on 20 October 2026. It was the first named storm of the 2026/27 season. At first there was a yellow wind warning for southern England and south Wales. An amber wind warning was added later and brought forward to start at 01:00 on Friday 23 October. Austen came ashore in the south-west overnight on 22–23 October, moved east during Friday and had cleared into the North Sea by Friday evening.
The strongest gusts were 76mph at St Mary's Airport (Isles of Scilly), 74mph at Aberporth (Wales) and 71mph at Culdrose (Cornwall), according to the Met Office. The BBC reported gusts of up to 84mph in Jersey and 76mph in Guernsey.
On 23 October more than 10,000 homes were without power. National Grid said it had reconnected more than 60,000 properties since the storm began. Fallen trees blocked railway lines and roads. Part of Brighton's derelict West Pier fell into the sea. All schools on Jersey and Guernsey closed, families were evacuated from a holiday park in Perranporth, and some UK–France ferries were cancelled. Jersey Airport stopped flights until at least 17:00, and Exeter airport had several cancellations. Hundreds of homes in south-west England were still without power on 25 October.
