Summary
Storm Agnes was named by the Met Office on 25 September 2023 and was the first named storm of the 2023/24 season. It crossed the UK on 27 to 28 September 2023, and part of its energy came from former Tropical Storm Ophelia. Agnes was weakening as it arrived, and its central pressure rose from 970hPa to 982hPa as it crossed Ireland. A yellow wind warning covered much of the UK. The highest gust was 84mph at Capel Curig (Conwy), the joint-highest September gust on record for Wales. Agnes disrupted Irish Sea ferries and caused some power cuts, fallen trees and road problems in Cumbria and south-west Scotland, but the Met Office described UK impacts as relatively modest.
