Summary
The Met Office named Storm Arwen on 25 November 2021, and it brought severe northerly winds overnight on 26 to 27 November 2021. The Met Office issued a red wind warning for the east coast of Scotland and north-east England, the first red warning for wind alone since Storm Gertrude in 2016. The highest gust was 98mph at Brizlee Wood, Northumberland, followed by 92mph at Berry Head (Devon) and 87mph at Orlock Head (County Down). Three people were killed by falling trees in Cumbria, Aberdeenshire and Northern Ireland. More than a million homes lost power, and over 100,000 of them were without power for several days. Fallen trees, overturned vehicles and snow on the Pennines caused severe road and rail disruption. Sources: Met Office storm report; Met Office UK storm season 2021/22.
