Summary
Storm Barra was named by Met Éireann on 5 December 2021 and brought strong winds and heavy rain to the UK on 7 to 8 December 2021. The highest UK gust was 86mph at Aberdaron, Gwynedd, and strong winds lasted unusually long because the storm stalled over the UK on 8 December. The Met Office issued yellow wind and snow warnings covering most of the UK. The worst impacts were in Ireland, where Met Éireann issued a red wind warning for Counties Cork and Kerry. In the UK, Barra slowed the reconnection of homes still without power after Storm Arwen. Waves damaged Aberystwyth promenade, Isle of Wight ferries were cancelled, and thousands of homes in Northern Ireland, Wales and north-east Scotland lost power.
