Summary
Storm Elin was named by Met Éireann and brought strong winds and heavy rain to the UK on 9 December 2023, followed within a day by Storm Fergus. The worst impacts were in Ireland, and UK impacts were mostly local. The Met Office issued yellow wind and rain warnings, and flooding was the main concern because the ground was already saturated after a wet autumn. Several stations in Lincolnshire, Suffolk, Lancashire, Cheshire, Merseyside and West Yorkshire recorded their highest December gusts since 5 December 2013. The Met Office gives gust figures only for Elin and Fergus combined; see Fergus. Sources: Met Office storm report (Elin and Fergus); BBC News.
