Summary
Storm Henk was named by the Met Office on 2 January 2024 and brought damaging winds and heavy rain to southern and central England and Wales that day. An amber wind warning covered south-west England, south Wales and then southern England and East Anglia. The highest gust was 94mph at Needles Old Battery (Isle of Wight), and Exeter Airport's 81mph was unusually strong for an inland site. A man died in Gloucestershire when a tree fell on his car, and about 38,000 properties lost power. The M25 Dartford Crossing closed, and rail travel was severely disrupted. Almost 300 flood warnings were issued in England, and hundreds of properties near the River Severn flooded, along with others in York and Wales. Sources: Met Office storm report; Met Office.
