Summary
Storm Malik was named by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) and brought damaging north-westerly winds to Scotland and north-east England on 29 January 2022, under a Met Office amber wind warning. The highest gust was 93mph at Brizlee Wood, Northumberland, with 85mph at Inverbervie (Kincardineshire). Gusts above 69mph at 23 stations put Malik among the ten most significant UK storms since naming began in 2015. Two people were killed by falling trees, a boy in Staffordshire and a woman in Aberdeen. Tens of thousands of homes lost power, mainly in Aberdeenshire, Northumberland and County Durham. Rail services in north-east England and Scotland were badly disrupted, and a house roof was blown off in Gateshead. Sources: Met Office storm report; Scottish Government; BBC News.
