Summary
Storm Otto was named by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) and was the first named storm of the 2022/23 season. It moved quickly across northern Scotland on 17 February 2023. Yellow wind warnings covered Scotland and north-east England. The highest gusts were 83mph at Inverbervie (Kincardineshire), Inverbervie's highest February gust on record, and 81mph at Tain Range and Lossiemouth. Thousands of homes in northern Scotland lost power overnight, and trains, buses and ferries were disrupted. Fallen trees blocked many routes in Aberdeenshire, where over 100 schools closed. The Met Office described Otto as a fairly typical Atlantic winter storm. Sources: Met Office storm report; BBC News.
